When you have an unread message, a red indicator with the number of unread messages from that contact appears to the right of the contact’s name.
Tap the group name or contact name to navigate to your conversation and view unread messages.

Additionally, when you have unread messages, a red badge indicating the number of conversations that have unread messages is displayed next to the Recent button.
